Practice Throwing Shuriken… While Lying Down?!

Kurosawa Sensei’s Shurikenjutsu Online Lessons have always included solid kihon (basic) kata training as part of our foundational practice.

But this time… Sensei surprised us all.
He revealed that there is another basic kata we had not yet trained.

And its name is:

🌀 “Neuchi” (Lying-Down Throw)

👉 Lesson details here:

Yes. You read that correctly.

This is literally a practice where you throw shuriken from a lying-down position.
When Sensei announced it, every student was shocked.

“Wait… we can train like that?!”

Apparently, yes. We can.

Why Train Like This?

At first glance, it sounds unusual.
But when you think about it, this is exactly what makes classical martial traditions so fascinating.

True budo does not assume:

  • Perfect footing
  • Ideal distance
  • Comfortable posture

Instead, it asks:

“Can you still perform under any condition?”

Training to throw while lying down forces you to:

  • Control your body without stable footing
  • Adjust your angle and alignment
  • Maintain focus even in disadvantageous positions

In other words — it feels very budo-like and very koryu-like.
