This Time’s Focus: Wakizashi Techniques
In this section, we train 13 wakizashi techniques, all performed from seiza.
You begin with the wakizashi placed either to your left or right, and attack from that position.
What makes these techniques especially unique is this 👇
-
Unlike uchigatana techniques, there is no saya handling
- And if the sword is placed on your right side, you must naturally draw with your left hand
Why Is This So Difficult at First?
At the beginning, most people struggle—and that’s completely normal.
But once again, this difficulty is intentional.

The Samurai Way of Thinking
Samurai of the past trained relentlessly so they could win under any circumstances.
They never assumed ideal conditions.
By practicing these wakizashi techniques, you will quickly deepen your understanding of:
- How a blade behaves without the support of the scabbard
- How your body adapts when usual habits no longer work
- And how true technique emerges only outside your comfort zone
These kata will dramatically expand your relationship with the katana and wakizashi alike.
