Hello everyone. Thank you for reading this article. I’m Shogo from Let’s ask Shogo, the interpreter of the online lessons and owner of this website.
We have decided to change the color of the outer Obi belts according to each Dan rank. Until now, everyone wore white belts. If you’re wondering what “Outer Obi belts” are in the first place, please check out this video.
New Colored Belts
- No/First Dan: White
- Second Dan: Navy
- Third Dan: Green
- Fourth Dan: Brown
- Fifth Dan: Black

Why did we create this new rule?
- We want to create opportunities for those practicing alone to feel a greater sense of progress.
- We want you to be dignified when training as a role model for your juniors in the online lessons.
- It will be convenient to easily identify everyone’s rank during team assignments and when instructing juniors at the training camp.
⚠️Points of Caution⚠️
- Custom embroidering on belts (other than the manufacturer’s logo, etc.) is prohibited. If you already have additional embroidery, please do not add it to any new belts you purchase in the future.
- Differently colored belts are a rule only for online lessons and training camps. When practicing at the Honbu dojo (headquarters), please follow the Honbu’s rules.
- There’s no rush to change the belt colors. Changing them after the Dan promotion exam in September of this year is fine.
