Uchi-katana Seated Techniques Edition

Starting in 2026, the Shinkage-ryu Hōgan-ha Class officially began!

In this class, we train in flashy, distinctive techniques once practiced by samurai officials (hōgan) of the past—methods refined for real-world situations and unconventional scenarios.

This Time’s Focus: Seated Techniques Using the Uchigatana (Long Sword)

In this set, you will practice 13 seated techniques, all performed from seiza.
You begin with the sword placed either to your left or right, and launch your attack from there.

One particularly unique point is this 👇

When the sword is placed on your right side, you must naturally draw it with your left hand.

At first, this feels extremely challenging.

1. Handling a sword outside the scabbard already feels unstable
2. Drawing with the left hand is something most practitioners almost never do
3. It’s easy to feel awkward, hesitant, or uncoordinated

But this is exactly the point.

Samurai of the past trained to win in any situation, no matter how unusual or disadvantageous.

These techniques are a direct reflection of that mindset.

By practicing them, you’ll quickly deepen your understanding of:
