Hello everyone, thank you for reading this article. I’m Shogo from Let’s ask Shogo, the interpreter of the online lessons and owner of this website.
I often say in our YouTube videos on Let’s ask Seki Sensei and on this website that Seki Sensei is absolutely the best Sensei to learn from in Japan. When I’m saying this, I’m not exaggerating or just saying so because he is my Sensei too. I seriously mean it, and here are some reasons why.
- He has trained katana martial arts since he was 3 years old (more than 45 years now)
- He is 8th Dan in Iaido, 7th Dan in Jōdo, and 5th Dan in Kendo
- He has won national tournaments in Iaido 3 times, in Jōdō 2 times
- He is the 22nd headmaster of a Kobudo Ryuha style with 400 years of history
- He is an instructor level in other Ryuha, such as Musō Shinden Ryu, Hokushin-Ittō-Ryu, Isshin Ryu Kusarigama, etc.
I’m going to stop here because the list can go on forever…
Many teachers can only handle katana and have no background in competition results. On the other hand, Seki Sensei has demonstrated his ability in official events. He has not only deep experience and knowledge in Katana martial arts but can also handle other weapons, such as the Jō staff, Kama sickle, Tessen iron fans, Kusarigama chain ball, etc. Every time we do online lessons, I am amazed at the amount of knowledge and experience our teacher has. In the past, he has never failed to answer any question from his students.
Last but not least, what’s amazing is his kind personality and stunning ability to teach his skills to his students. Many people are good at demonstrating their skills, but not at teaching them to others. However, Seki Sensei is not only a great performer but can also logically communicate his skills to his students. And you all have me. Even if you don’t understand Japanese, don’t worry, I will translate everything perfectly into English.
I’m sure by now you understand why I always say “Seki Sensei is absolutely the best Sensei to learn from in Japan.” If you or anyone else is interested in learning Japanese Budo, you have no other choice but to choose him to learn from.
Great start to the blog. Everyone in class agrees for the reasons you have laid out here, specifically this I think:

I can honestly say, in the time I’ve spent learning from Seki Sensei, I’ve never had a better teacher. He is incredibly skilled, insightful, thoughtful and patient.
Seki-sensei is just a pleasure in the lessons. He’s such a friendly person and he makes everyone feel included and welcome.
It’s fun watching him react to just about anything. Whether a student needs improvement or of they perfectly perform a move, he’s enthusiastic about the progress and you can tell he’s invested in our growth.
I could listen to him and Shogo spill all the historical secrets all day and come back for more. I simply can’t get enough of these lessons!
Seki-sensei is a treasure, for sure. I’m grateful for this crew, and how happy I am to be part of it, every single day.
